Thomas & Friends[e] is a British children's television series that aired from 9 October 1984 to 20 January 2021. Based on The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher, the series was developed for television by Britt Allcroft. The series follows the adventures of Thomas, an anthropomorphic blue steam locomotive on the fictional Island of Sodor along with his friends Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, as well as others. Over five hundred episodes were produced over the course of 24 seasons.
In the United States, it was first broadcast along with the spin-off series, Shining Time Station, on PBS' PTV Park block on 29 January 1989, while broadcast of the series did shift overtime, it later aired on PBS Kids up until 2017. The rights to the series are currently owned by HIT Entertainment (a subsidiary of Mattel), which acquired Gullane Entertainment in July 2002. HIT was folded into Mattel in 2016.
A new 2D-animated series, Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, premiered on 13 September 2021 on Cartoon Network's preschool block Cartoonito.[2 • This is a list for every narrator for both The Railway Series and Thomas & Friends. Main article: The Railway Stories Julia Lang was the narrator in the 1953 BBC adaptation of The Sad Story of Henry. She was the first narrator in the franchise. Wilbert Awdry, the Railway Series author, narrated Edward's Day Out and Edward and Gordon for a vinyl record release in 1957. Johnny Morris narrated The Three Railway Engines through Percy the Small Engine, records released by Delyse Records from 1961 to 1966. He was the first narrator to read the Railway Series stories other than The Three Railway Engines. Willie Rushton became the narrator for the Railway Stories after Johnny Morris left. He narrated Edward the Blue Engine through Tramway Engines from 1979 to 1984. John Gielgud narrated books one to twelve of the Railway Series for The Noel Edmonds Show on BBC Radio 1.
