Alabama's still breathing in that "Smoke From a Distant Fire"
Some songs seem to have a magical ability to take you back to a special place in time the minute you hear them. For me, "Smoke From a Distant Fire" by the Sanford/Townsend Band has that kind of magic. It always makes me feel like I'm in high school again. What I didn't know until recently, however, is that these guys are Bama Boys! I should have knownthat Muscle Shoals Sound is so much a part of us here in Alabama.
When the song was released back in the summer of , I could never have imagined that a thing called "Facebook" and a fun project called "Strange Alabama" would allow me to become online friends with the guy behind that incredible, soulful, voice -- Johnny Townsend.
A Tuscaloosa boy, Johnny grew up on Loop Road, which was just a dirt road when his grandparents purchased their property. By the time Johnny came along in , however, the roads were paved and a few homes and businesses were springing up here and there. He remembers his childhood as being a series of "Tom Sawyer-like experiences" playing in the surrounding forests and streams.

He is currently a proud member of the Boulder Symphony, where he brings his energy and enthusiasm to every performance. Playing in the orchestra is like being part of a family, Edward states.
