    Guided by an early vow at age 4 to be an opera singer, Dixie Carter spent much of her life on stage, singing and acting. Theater appearances on and off Broadway earned her critical acclaim and included Sextet (), Pal Joey (), Master Class (), and Thoroughly Modern Millie (). While singing remained her greatest love, Carter's commercial success and popular recognition came from her television career—the seven seasons she spent on the set of the successful television series Designing Women, and a recurring role as a scary mother-in-law on Desperate Housewives, which earned her an Emmy nomination in Dixie Carter added "author" to her list of accomplishments when she published a memoir in , Trying to Get to Heaven: Opinions of a Tennessee Talker. Like many other celebrities, she also has a few workout, or rather, "unworkout" tapes to her credit: Dixie Carter's Unworkout and Dixie Carter's Yoga for You: Unworkout II.

    Dixie Virginia Carter (May 25, – April 10, ) was an American actress. She starred as Julia Sugarbaker on the sitcom Designing Women (–) and as Randi King on the drama series Family Law (–). She was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives (–).

    Carter made her professional stage debut in a Memphis production of the musical Carousel in and made her Broadway debut in the musical Sextet. After appearing for two years as District Attorney Brandy Henderson on the CBS soap The Edge of Night (–), she starred in the Broadway revival of the musical Pal Joey. Her other television roles included the sitcoms On Our Own (–), Filthy Rich (–) and Diff'rent Strokes (–). She returned to Broadway to play Maria Callas in the play Master Class in and to play Mrs. Meers in the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie in
